Palm kernel olein is produced by fractionating palm kernel oil and taking the liquid portion after the higher-melting fraction has crystallised and been filtered off. Typical values are lauric acid at 40 to 48 percent, myristic at 14 to 17 percent, capric at 3 to 5 and caprylic at 3 to 4, with an iodine value of 20 to 28, a saponification value of 230 to 250 and a cloud point of 8 to 12 degrees Celsius. Fractionation does two things at once. It shifts the chain distribution toward the shorter caprylic and capric acids, which raises solubility and gives a lighter, less occlusive feel in a cosmetic base. And it keeps the material liquid at ordinary room temperature, which is the practical point: a lauric oil that does not set solid can be metered, pumped and blended cold, so it suits liquid soaps, shampoos and lotions where a solid fat would have to be melted into the batch. It retains the fast-lathering behaviour of the parent oil, since the lauric fraction is still dominant, and its low unsaturation keeps it stable against oxidation despite being liquid. It is used in liquid soaps and body washes, lotions, creams and shampoos, in confectionery coatings and fillings, and as feedstock for fatty acid and methyl ester production.
