Ordinary palm stearin still carries substantial unsaturation, at an iodine value in the region of 35 to 45. Hydrogenating it to 0.5 maximum removes essentially all of the remaining double bonds, and the result behaves quite differently: harder, sharper melting, and very resistant to oxidation and rancidity because there is almost nothing left to oxidise. That stability is the point. A wax blend that must sit on a shelf, or in a warm warehouse, for a long period without developing off-odours benefits from a fully saturated hardstock in a way that an unhydrogenated one does not. Supplied as flakes or beads with a melting point of 57C, acid value 1.0 maximum, and a fatty acid distribution of 55-62% C16 and 33-45% C18. Vegetable-based, from palm.
