Palm Wax

Palm wax is produced by fully hydrogenating refined palm oil, which saturates the fatty acid chains and converts a semi-solid fat into a firm, opaque wax. It carries CAS number 8021-56-5 and the INCI name Hydrogenated Palm Oil, and is supplied as white flakes or pastilles with melting points from 42 to 44 degrees Celsius through to 52 to 54, and grades up to 60. What distinguishes it among vegetable waxes is its crystal habit. Cooled slowly, palm wax forms large, visible crystals that produce a feathered or snowflake pattern across the surface and through the body of the candle, an effect candle makers cultivate deliberately rather than avoid; cooling quickly suppresses it and gives a plain finish. It is also harder and higher-melting than soy or rapeseed wax at comparable grades, so it stands up as a free-standing pillar without additives and tolerates warm climates better. Being fully saturated it resists oxidation and discolouration, and it releases cleanly from moulds because it shrinks noticeably on cooling. Sustainability certification is a standing requirement for most buyers. It is used in pillar and moulded candles, feather and crystal-effect candles, container candles in the softer grades, wax blends as a hardener, and in cosmetics and coatings.
