Rapeseed Wax

Rapeseed wax is produced by hydrogenating refined rapeseed oil, saturating its fatty acid chains to convert a liquid oil into a firm solid. It is supplied as blocks with a melting point of 42 to 52 degrees Celsius, suited to containers, and as pellets at 52 to 60 degrees for pillars and blends. Recommended pour temperature is 50 to 60 degrees and it should not be heated above 85. Its commercial position rests on origin as much as performance. Rapeseed is grown widely across Europe, so the wax carries a short and traceable supply chain for European makers, in contrast to soy wax, which is largely imported and carries land-use questions with it. Technically it behaves as a soft vegetable wax: good glass adhesion in containers, a creamy opaque surface, a low burn temperature giving long burn times, and a fragrance load of 7 to 10 percent. Compared with soy it tends to give a smoother, more consistent top surface with less pronounced frosting, and it holds colour well. Like all triglyceride waxes it shrinks on cooling and benefits from a slow, even cool rather than a draught. It is used in container candles, pillar candles from the pellet grade, wax melts, and as the vegetable component of natural and paraffin blends.
