Semi Refined Paraffin Wax (50-68°C)

Semi refined paraffin wax is petroleum wax that has been deoiled but not taken through the full hydrotreating and decolourising sequence. It carries CAS number 8002-74-2 and is supplied as slabs or granules in melting grades from 50 to 68 degrees Celsius, with an oil content typically between 0.5 and 1.5 percent. That residual oil is the entire difference between this and the fully refined grade, and it cuts both ways. It carries a faint petroleum odour and a slight off-white to cream cast, and it can migrate to the surface over time as sweating, so the wax is not suitable for food contact or for delicate unscented cosmetic work. But it also plasticises the wax slightly, which improves mould release and reduces cracking in large castings, and it makes the wax noticeably cheaper. For a scented candle, where fragrance masks the trace odour and colour is added anyway, those trade-offs are usually worth taking, which is why semi refined grades dominate volume candle production. Melting grade is chosen by format in the same way as for fully refined wax. It is used in scented and coloured candles, tealights and votives, fire logs, board sizing and paper coating, rubber and tyre compounding and in industrial applications.
