Fully refined paraffin wax is produced by dewaxing lubricating oil fractions, then deoiling and hydrotreating the recovered wax until oil content falls below 0.5 percent. It carries CAS number 8002-74-2 and consists of straight-chain normal alkanes, mostly C20 to C40. It is supplied as white slabs, pastilles or granules in melting grades from 50 to 68 degrees Celsius. The degree of refining is what separates it from cheaper grades and determines where it can be used. Residual oil carries colour, odour and the tendency to sweat, so removing it to below half a percent gives a wax that is white, effectively odourless, non-staining and stable in storage. That is the threshold for food contact and cosmetic use, and it is also what makes the wax suitable for candles that must burn without off-odour and take fragrance cleanly. Straight-chain alkanes crystallise into large, regular plates, which is why paraffin is hard, glossy and brittle rather than flexible, and why it gives such a smooth cast surface. Melting grade is selected by format: lower grades for containers, higher for pillars and tapers. It is used in candles of every format, in food packaging and coatings, in cosmetics and depilatory wax, in polishes, crayons, rubber compounding and as a moisture barrier.
